Solar D2D: The Utility-Rate-Hike Opener That Earns 30 Seconds at Any Door
Why "I'm here about solar" kills the door
The homeowner's brain has heard 14 solar pitches this year. The second they hear "solar," defenses lock. Solar D2D reps who open with the product die at hello.
The fix: open with the rate hike — every utility in every state has raised rates the past 3 years, and every homeowner has felt it. Lead there.
The 12-second opener
"Hey — I'm not selling anything. Quick question: did you notice your electric bill went up about 18% this year? Most of the street did. Just trying to figure out who on this block actually understands why it's happening — got 30 seconds?"
Three things just happened:
1. "Not selling" disarms defenses
2. The 18% number is real and verifiable — they've felt it
3. "Who on this block" creates social-proof curiosity
The rate-hike frame
Once they're listening:
"Your utility just got approved for another 9% in 2026 and another 7% in 2027 — that's 16% more on top of the 18% you already absorbed. Solar isn't about going green — it's about locking your rate at today's price for 25 years. That's the actual conversation. Not panels. Not green energy. Cost certainty."
You just turned solar from a product pitch into an inflation hedge. Different brain pathway. Different objection set.
The bill-pull demo
"Pull up your last bill on your phone. Got it? OK — your usage is 1,400 kWh at $0.13. That's $182/month. With the projected rate hikes, by 2030 that same usage costs you $267/month. Across 25 years you pay $76,400. Solar locks it at $128/month for 25 years — total $38,400. You save $38,000 over the life of the system. The system itself is $0 down."
The "I'll wait for cheaper panels" reframe
"Panel prices dropped 89% in the last decade and stopped dropping in 2022 — we're at the floor. What's still going up is utility rates. So you're not waiting for a better deal — you're paying full price every month you wait. The math gets worse, not better."
The lease-vs-purchase frame
"Two ways to do this. Lease/PPA: $0 out of pocket, you pay our rate of $0.09/kWh for 25 years, locked. Loan: you finance the system, get the 30% federal tax credit, and own it outright in 7 years. Lease is easier, loan is more profitable. Most clients pick loan if they have tax appetite, lease if they don't."
The same-night close
"If we lock tonight, the engineering site survey is Saturday and install is 8-12 weeks out. Deposit is $0 — first payment is $0 until the system is producing power. Want me to pull up the e-sign?"
The "I need to talk to my spouse" defense
"100% — let's call her right now. 4 minutes. She's going to ask you about it after I leave anyway, and I can answer her questions better than the version you'll relay tomorrow. What's the best number?"
(80% of homeowners agree to spouse-on-speaker. Most spouses respect being included.)
The "neighbor across the street" social proof
If you've installed nearby:
"Quick check — see [neighbor's address] across the street? We installed there in February. Their bill went from $190 to $11 last month. Want me to text them and you can ask them directly?"
(Most reps never offer this. Top reps do — and 90% of homeowners take the offer.)
