How to Build a Sales Territory From Scratch (D2D + Field)

See if your answer holds up

Top closers don't guess — they run a system. Here's the exact playbook for how to build a sales territory from scratch.

Week 1: Map and tier

Drive every street. Tier neighborhoods A/B/C by home value, age, and visible signs of disposable income (boats, second cars, landscaping). A-tier gets your prime hours; C-tier gets your warm-up reps.

Week 2: Knock A-tier 3x deep

Every A-tier home, 3 attempts at different times: weekday evening, Saturday mid-morning, Sunday afternoon. Most reps quit after 1 knock; that's why most reps starve.

Week 3: Build the referral net

Every closed deal: ask for 2 neighbor names. 'Who on this street should I talk to next?' That's how you compound a territory instead of grinding it.

Week 4: Audit and re-tier

Review the data: which streets converted, which didn't, which neighborhoods need more attempts. Re-tier and repeat. Territory is a living asset, not a one-time map.

FAQ

How long does it take to build a D2D territory?

30 days to map and prove the tier system. 90 days to compound through referrals. 6 months to dominate.

How many doors should I knock per day in a new territory?

60–100 doors in the first 30 days. Volume builds the data you need to tier intelligently.

What makes a territory profitable?

Tiering plus depth. Most reps spread thin and knock once. Top closers knock A-tier 3x and compound through referrals.
