The principle. State is a skill. Confidence, focus, and energy aren't moods you wait for โ they're states you can install on command with a repeatable ritual.
Why rituals work. Repeated sequences condition the nervous system. After 30 days of the same pre-call sequence, your brain learns: this means it's go-time. The state shows up automatically.
A 90-second pre-call ritual that works.
- Box breathing โ 30 seconds. 4 in, 4 hold, 4 out, 4 hold. Two cycles. Drops cortisol, sharpens focus.
- Power posture โ 20 seconds. Stand up. Chest open. Feet planted. Even on a Zoom call where they can't see your legs โ your body changes your voice.
- Identity prime โ 20 seconds. Read your closer-identity sentence out loud. ("I am someone who serves the prospect by telling them the truth and asking for the close every time.")
- One review โ 20 seconds. Review your one specific intent for this call. Not "close them" โ "find out what's really blocking them on the price."
That's it. 90 seconds. Run it before every call.
The mistake. Skipping it because "I'm fine." You're not running the ritual to fix a problem โ you're running it to install a baseline. The day you feel "fine" without it is the day you stop seeing why it works.
Pair with a post-call ritual. 30 seconds after each call: one breath, one note (what worked / what to improve), reset. Stops the previous call from leaking into the next.
Top performers vs average. The difference isn't talent. It's consistency of state. Average reps perform inconsistently. Top reps walk into every call in the same state.
