Focus on inputs, not outcomes

You can't control closes. You can control dials, prep, and asks. Score yourself on what's yours.

Combine fundamentals with timing and read.

The trap. Reps grade themselves on outcomes โ€” closes, revenue, quota %. The problem: outcomes are partly out of your control. Bad market week, weird leads, a boss-from-hell prospect โ€” your effort can be perfect and the outcome can still suck. Now you're punishing yourself for things you didn't cause.

The fix: input scorecard. Pick 3-5 daily inputs you can control 100%. Score yourself on those, not on closes.

Example input scorecard.

  • Dials made: target 60.
  • Pre-call rituals run: target 100% of calls.
  • Direct close asks: target 1 per qualified call.
  • Discovery calls where Implication question was used: target 100%.
  • Post-call notes filled: target 100%.

Why it works. Inputs are 100% in your control. Hitting them is a win regardless of the outcome. Over weeks/months, consistent inputs cause outcomes โ€” but you're not riding the daily emotional rollercoaster of did-I-close.

The compounding effect. A rep who hits inputs 90% of days for a year will outperform a rep who white-knuckles outcomes and burns out by month 3. The slow path is the fast path.

Where reps fail. Picking 15 inputs and tracking none. Pick 3-5 that genuinely move your business. Track them. Review weekly.

Mini drill

Today, write your 3-5 daily input metrics. Score yourself tonight. Repeat for 30 days.
