Calibrated questions: 'how' and 'what' over 'why'

Voss again: 'why' triggers defense. 'How' and 'what' trigger collaboration. Swap them.

Combine fundamentals with timing and read.

The principle. "Why" questions feel accusatory in almost every culture. "Why didn't you act sooner?" reads as judgment. "How" and "what" questions feel like genuine curiosity โ€” and they force the prospect to think instead of defend.

The swap.

  • โŒ "Why are you considering switching?" โ†’ feels like an interrogation.

  • โœ… "What's making this the right time to look at alternatives?"

  • โŒ "Why didn't you fix this last year?"

  • โœ… "How did you end up living with this for so long?"

  • โŒ "Why is the price an issue?"

  • โœ… "How am I supposed to make this work for you?"

That last one is gold. Voss calls it the "no-yes" โ€” you put the problem in their lap, calibrated, and they often help you solve it.

The two best calibrated questions.

  1. "What's the biggest challenge you face?" โ€” opens up the real pain.
  2. "How can I make this easier for you?" โ€” flips them into ally mode instead of opponent mode.

Where reps fail. Defaulting to "why" because it's faster. Yes, "why" gets a faster answer โ€” but the answer is usually defensive, not honest. The slower question gets the truth.

Tone matters. Calibrated questions sound nosy if delivered fast or hard. Use the late-night DJ voice โ€” slow, curious, patient.

Mini drill

Audit your 5 most common discovery questions. Rewrite every 'why' as a 'what' or 'how.' Use the new versions on your next call.
